Music Magaizne Features

Photography and Ideology
The model in my photography must look like a rock star to fit the ideology of the specific audience. I will dress my model in a rock star fashion such as black clothing to give connotations of the rock star they are. I will also include musical props which also make the magazine look more realistic and adds to the fat that it is a MUSIC magazine. The audience must believe that the magazine is real therefore I will include real life bands which they would have heard of to promote the magazine.

1. Magazine front cover – my magazine front cover will include a medium shot of the model which will be in the feature article. The front cover will have text stating what the story is about to catch the aimed readers attention. I am not yet sure on what to call my magazine but I am currently thinking about it. The price of the magazine will be included on the front page to make it clear to the audience how much they are buying it for.

2. Contents Page – the contents is most probably the most important out of the three pieces. The contents will include every detail of what is in the magazine which will be numbered so the audience will be drawn to the specific page they are looking at. As well as this it will add ideology to the magazine as real life magazines have detailed contents pages to inform their aimed audience.

3. Feature Article – the plan of my feature article is a couple of pages down where you will see that I have included two photographs within, instead of just having one huge photograph which takes up most of the article, I have two smaller photographs so I can fit more text into the article which makes sense why it is called an ‘article’. Most of the pictures will be shown on the front cover and the contents page.  The article will be about a successful teenage who was found on Youtube and how her life has had a huge turn around.

COMPETITION
My main competition in my magazine is the music magazine ‘NME’. The price of my magazine will be competing against it and also the content of the magazine will be competing against it. the ideology of the music magazine is to MAKE the audience believe the magazine will be sold in shops therefore it needs to have competition. Other magazines that can compete against mine is ‘Kerrang!’.

Plan for double page feature



PLAN
My double page article will include two photographs, one smaller, and one medium. The left over space on the double page article will be taken up by the text in columns layed out neatly to catch the readers attention. More text will be used rather than pictures as the name is 'A double page article' and not a picture book. This is to inform and entertain the reader by reading the article. Pictures are more of a focus for the front cover and contents, however on the double page spread it will be focused on the text content.

What I have learned

Throughout completing this task I have learned how to take a suitable photograph for a magazine, by thinking of the mise-en-scene, lighting, and angles. I have also learned that the layout of the magazine is important in terms of ideaology as the main feature is to make it look realistic to the target audience. Photoshop has been used and my skills have been developed from using the programme. I think my skills developed from this task will help me produce my final piece of coursework which will be a music magazine.

This is the second magazine I produced which i aslo like aspects of however it involves certain features I dont like such as the blue text that says 'MY GCSE SHOCKER' and the blank spaces near the top of the cover.

This is the magazine which in my opinion is the best out of the three. I have taken features out of the other two magazines and made it into a front cover which I think is suitable for a school magazine.

Layout of the Magazine


Layout
  • Continuity is used on the front cover as the    colours used are red, black and white.
  • Medium shot of the main band included in the magazine.
  • Layout of text is down both of the sides to make the front cover look tidy, and escapes from the messy cluttered look.
  • Names of the bands are in bold and the related stories are in regular.
  • Photograph takes up most of the front cover and you never see huge spaces.

 The layout of a magazine is hugely important throughout the magazine. The layout needs to relate to the specific audience so they buy it from shops. The readers must beleive the magazine is real, therefore we must construct the magazine so it looks like a magazine you see in the newsagents, as a result it has to require a similar layout. The magazine above is an example of a music magazine which shows the layout of a regular front cover.

Good or Bad?


BAD
<------ This photograph is an example of a bad photograph taken by the group. The picture has the reflection of the sun light on the models face, therefore you can not see her properly. The picture also cut half of the word 'Learning' out which spoils the picture as the whole point is to show off the new school facilities.




GOOD
This is the photograph which I think is the best photograph which was taken by the group. The photo took a long time to take, and the photographer took her time whilst placing the models in their positions. The photo looks proffessional which is why I have chosen it as my favourite photograph. ------->



What makes a good photograph?
a good photograph first of all needs to have perfect lighting, mise-en-scene, and correct angles of the camera, therefore thought must be put into it incuding:
  • Time of day
  • Where it is taken - inside or outside
  • What shot? Close up, medium shot, long shot, high angle shot, or low angle shot.
  • Area it is taken e.g. the coast, or what relates to the genre of the magazine
  • Model - does it relate to the genre of the magazine?
  • Clothing and appearence
Photographs must be taken with thought with a lot of effort put into them to make the magazine stand out, as it is probably the item that stands out to the specific audience on the front cover.

SCHOOL MAGAZINE - FINAL PRODUCT!














This is my final school magazine front cover. I have worked on this cover to develop my skills for my actual project later in the year.
